The summertime also brings
along a new group of physician
residents who will ride with Barnard
Paramedics. As you may recall,
two years ago, we were asked to be
the sole fire based EMS program in
Monroe County to participate in the
University of Rochester’s Emergency
Medicine Resident training program.
In their second year of residency,
each physician is required to ride
various shifts with Barnard Paramedics
to help them gain a fire based
EMS pre-hospital perspective. Often
times, a patient’s condition has greatly
improved by the time they reach
the emergency department from the
field and this program assists the University’s
new EM physicians in understanding
the dynamics that go into
that patient’s pre-hospital treatment.
So in the event you call for EMS, you
may very well have a physician in attendance
with our providers at your
side. Most often, these physicians are
in an observation role, but they are all
authorized to transition into a hands
on role and provide on scene Medical
Direction to our Paramedics for
certain medications and procedures.
Lastly, the Barnard Paramedics
who have been selected by a regional
accreditation process recently
completed our annual anatomical gift
cadaver training at the University Of
Rochester School Of Medicine. Under
the supervision of Barnard Medical
Director, Jeremy Cushman, MD
– all Paramedics completed several
anatomy procedure modules. Primarily
the focus was on advanced management
of difficult patient airways.
- The learning objectives include:
• Describe airway specific anatomy
- • Review indications for advanced
airway management and evaluation
of the difficult airway
- • Demonstrate proper airway adjunct
placement
- • Demonstrate proper endotracheal
tube placement using a variety
of techniques (various blade
types, use of Flexguide/Bougie,
external laryngeal manipulation,
orotracheal and digital intubation
techniques)
- • Demonstrate proper use and
placement of rescue airway devices
(King LT, Combitube, LMA)
- • Demonstrate indications / contraindications
and proper techniques
for needle and surgical
cricothyrotomy, and needle thoracostomy
This procedural skills lab is part
of an annual mandatory in-service for
our highly trained Paramedics. The
Barnard Fire District is proud to set
the standard and remain not only the
only Paramedic based fire service
agency in the town, but the sole such
agency in the County by which all
others are measured. |
