Fire Prevention Education
The Barnard Fire District is committed to making the Town of Greece one of America’s safest communities. The Barnard Fire District is a leader in Monroe County and Western New York in the field of public safety education. The Fire District’s award-winning community outreach programs offer a variety of fire and life safety topics to meet the needs of our diverse community.
Starting in preschool, students learn about match and lighter safety, Stop, Drop & Roll, and Crawling Low Under Smoke directly from our District Fire Safety Personnel. Once students enter elementary school they learn about various topics at the K-5 grade levels. The Barnard Fire District has worked closely with the teachers and staff of the Greece Central School district in developing a high-quality program that is both age and grade specific and meets the New York State learning standards for each grade level. Each classroom, in every grade level is visited twice during the school year. Fire safety topics such as calling 911, exit drills in the home (Operation E.D.I.T.H.), home fire hazards, burn prevention, carbon monoxide poisoning, and kitchen fire safety are a few of the safety issues our educational programs address.
Our senior population is the fastest growing segment of our community. Our public outreach programs address fire safety issues that apply to older adults as well as assessing the fall risk and prevention in the home. Complimentary blood pressure screenings and the File for Life program are other components of our public outreach for seniors.
The Barnard Fire District offers other programs to our residents upon request. Examples include tours of the fire station, working with boy scout & girl scout troops on merit badge topics such as first aid, knot tying and fire safety, and participating in community festivals and school events.
